Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia

Muslim people have two big celebrations every year. They are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. At the end of fasting month or Ramadan, Muslim people all over the world are celebrating Eid al-Fitr in different ways according to their own customs.

The religious Eid is a single day when Muslims are not permitted to fast. The day of Eid falls on the first day of any lunar Hijri month based on the observation of the new moon by local religious authorities. So, the exact day of Eid al-Fitr varies from country to country. However, in most countries, it is generally celebrated on the same day as it is in Saudi Arabia.

Common greetings during this celebration are the Arabic greeting ‘Eid Mubarak’, which means ‘Blessed Eid’, or ‘Eid Said’, which means ‘happy Eid’. The word ‘eid’ itself means ‘celebration’. In Indonesia, people greet each other by saying ‘selamat idul fitri’, which means ‘happy Eid’. Muslims also greet one another by saying ‘mohon maaf lahir dan batin’, which literally means ‘please forgive my body (outwardly) and soul (inwardly)’.

Eid Al-Fitr, also known as Hari Raya Idul Fitri or more commonly as Lebaran in Bahasa, is a national holiday in Indonesia. During this celebration, the largest temporary human migration in Indonesia takes place every year. In 2013, around 30 million Indonesians traveled to their hometowns during the Lebaran holiday. This is known in Indonesia as ‘mudik’ (go back to one’s hometown) or ‘pulang kampung’ (homecoming).

Since this is a very special occasion, people celebrate with special dishes. In Indonesia, the most common dish on Lebaran day is ketupat, which is rice cooked inside of a pouch made from woven young palm leaves. Ketupat is usually eaten with rendang, opor ayam, sayur labu (chayote soup), or sambal goreng hati (liver in sambal), or served as an accompaniment to satay (chicken or red meat in skewers) or gado-gado (mixed vegetables with peanut sauce). Ketupat is also the main element of certain dishes such as ketupat sayur (ketupat in chayote soup with tofu and boiled egg) and kupat tahu (ketupat and tofu in peanut sauce).

During Hari Raya Idul Fitri, younger family members will go to visit older family members or relatives to wish them a happy Eid, and also to ask for forgiveness. It is a very joyous day for children as adults give them money in colorful envelopes. Also, everyone gets to wear their newest or best clothes.
